All dye and additive rules in California

Potassium bromate is still permitted at federal level in two places: in malting barley, under 21 CFR 172.730, and in flour, where the standard of identity for bromated flour at 21 CFR 137.155 allows it up to 50 parts per million. No proposal to revoke those uses had been published in the Federal Register by November 1, 2026. From January 1, 2027, its Food Safety Act bans it outright from food manufactured, sold or distributed in the state, with a civil penalty of up to $5,000 for a first violation and $10,000 for each later one. Utah, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana and Iowa name it in their school rules. On a label it appears as potassium bromate or as "bromated flour".
